In Case You Missed It...
Between The Pages ~ Live with Kate James
March 10, 2017 on our Facebook Page
Kate James I would be happy to. Here is what the story is about: New York based communications executive Emma Meadows never imagined that sticking to her principles against an act of corruption would cost her her job and her relationship. Heartbroken, she retreats to her lakefront cabin in the Adirondack Mountains. Aiding an injured animal at the side of a rain-drenched road, she meets local veterinarian Joshua Whitmore. Gradually, Josh’s charm and persistence overcome her defenses. But when Emma’s past abruptly intrudes—putting reputations and even lives at stake—it threatens everything she and Josh have begun to build together.
Still Moments Magazine Kate James The opening of this story is so great. I was drawn in immediately.
Kate James Still Moments Magazine Thanks. I did a reading with the wonderful Rosanna Leo a couple of weeks ago, and I had to assure the people in the audience that the pups in my books have their own happy endings, too!
Still Moments Magazine Kate James I'm sure the reading went well. Where you nervous?
Kate James I love interacting with readers, but I have to say that Rosanna Leo is a fabulous author and she read a very impactful passage, so she was a tough act to follow!
Still Moments Magazine Kate James I'm sure you captivated those readers too!
Rosanna Leo Hugs, Kate James! Thanks for your kind comments. You were wonderful! I hope we can do it again.
Kate James Rosanna Leo I'd love that, Rosanna! I hope you're staying warm today.
Rosanna Leo Warm at work, Kate. Lol. Hope you are warm as well!
Kate, where did the inspiration for the title and this story come from, and where will the story take the reader?
Kate James The idea for this story has been around for a while. I was exposed to an incident of corruption early in my business career, and no amount of pressure could cause me to compromise my integrity and principles. Whatever else happened, I had to be able to go home at the end of the day, look myself in the mirror, and know I had done the right thing. There’s an underlying message in Sanctuary Cove which I truly believe in, that if you do the right thing, the right things will (eventually) happen. The incident I mentioned above inspired me, and I wanted to write the story of a young woman principled enough not to compromise her ethics or integrity, despite the personal cost. Of course, it’s still a romance and Emma and Josh (as well as their dogs) find their HEA!
Still Moments Magazine How great of you to not compromise your integrity and principles! And adding that twist into your story brought out the emotion, which shows how important the message is to you and the reader see that. Well done!
Kate James Still Moments Magazine Thank you, again.
Darla Czapnick That's great!
I’ve had the pleasure of reading Sanctuary Cove and was hooked during the first scene. You have a seamless way of captivating the reader with emotion, setting, and characters (both two-legged and four). This story also has an element of mystery. Without giving away too much, I’ll just say that you keep the reader guessing who is lurking in the woods on Emma’s property. Do you find it difficult to add in an element of mystery, or does it come easily?
Kate James Aww, thank you, Darlene. I’m so happy you enjoyed Sanctuary Cove! Actually, the mystery and suspense come naturally for me. My San Diego K-9 Unit series is another example where suspense is integral to the story.
Still Moments Magazine Kate James I would love for you to stop by again soon so we can talk about your K-9 series. I really enjoyed that series and I'm looking forward to the next one!
Kate James Still Moments Magazine Thanks, again, Darlene. Just a few more months until the fourth book releases!
Kate James Still Moments Magazine ...and, of course, I would always love to chat with you!
Still Moments Magazine Kate, I enjoy the suspense. It adds an extra element and enjoyment to your stories.
Kate James Still Moments Magazine Thank you!
I love stories that include dogs, and Sanctuary Cove has three! Do you make up the breed and names, or do you portray them after a pet you’ve had?
Kate James I do tend to have furry, four-legged characters in my books, who often play essential parts in the plot and/or with respect to bringing the hero and heroine together, and Sanctuary Cove is no exception. I do both—pick a breed that seems to suit the role the dog plays or fictionalize a pet I’ve had. In Sanctuary Cove, Theo is entirely fictitious, while Max and Winston are based on two of our previous pups, Casper and Buster, respectively. Buster looks a little like your own beloved Jag, doesn’t he? Here’s a fun post about how I had to rewrite portions of a story when the book’s cover ended up with an entirely different breed of dog:
(I still suspect it was a conspiracy between our pup, Logan, and my editor’s cat, Logan, as the dog on the cover ended up looking suspiciously like canine Logan! Still Moments Magazine Kate James You paint the reader a picture of your furry friends in your books that they come alive on the pages. Seeing the photos you post to reflect your four-legged characters from the books is bonus and brings another connection to you and the reader.
Kate James Thank you, Darlene, but I'm not the only person here who writes terrific dog characters. If I could post I pick right now, I would post the cover your book Hershey's Choice! With yellow lab, Jag, black labs, Harley and Logan, and chocolate lab, Hershey, we have Neapolitan pups!
Still Moments Magazine Kate James Thank you for the shout out of Hershey's Choice. And just a peek between us...and everyone reading this, lol...in my new story there is a yellow lab...what a coincidence, lol
Kate James Still Moments Magazine Ohhhh...what's the title of the book and when will it release??
Still Moments Magazine Kate James It still in the writing stages, but it's book four of my Redford Falls series :)
Kate James Wonderful! Does the yellow lab have a name?
Still Moments Magazine Kate James Cider...matching the colour of apple cider to the yellow lab ;)
Kate James Still Moments Magazine Aww, I love it! We forgot to mention that I have a character whose alias is the same as your pups name!
Still Moments Magazine Kate James I know which one you mean...And that just happens to be one of my favourite books!
Kate, what can we look forward to with your next writing project?
Kate James In addition to Sanctuary Cove, I will have two more releases this year. Home to Stay, the fourth book in the San Diego K-9 Unit series releases on July 1st (I had to sneak in a picture of the two dogs in that story) and A Priceless Find, a sequel to A Child’s Christmas, will be released on October 1st. Home to Stay is in production now and A Priceless Find is in the editing stage.
Still Moments Magazine Kate James I can't wait for Home to Stay! July 1st is too far away :( And now seeing the picture of the dogs in that story makes it even harder to wait!
Still Moments Magazine Kate James How did I miss your Christmas story?! I better catch up on that one before the sequel comes out.
Kate James Still Moments Magazine It's sold out in print, but it will be my pleasure to gift you a Kindle copy!
Still Moments Magazine Kate James Thank you! I am adding it to my reading list now! I love Christmas stories...any time of the year.
Kate, you are sharing your release day with four other authors. Can you share the link to your garden theme giveaways?
Kate James Yes, I am!
