After The Review - Home To Stay

Between The Pages ~ After The Review
A conversation with the Author
Home To Stay by Kate James

What’s one thing that readers would be surprised to know about you?
I spoke four languages before the age of 18. People used to ask me where I was from as (unrecognizable to me) I had an accent. Because it resulted from a combination of the languages I spoke and the countries where I lived, no one could place it.

Where did the inspiration for Home to Stay come from?
Home to Stay is the fourth book in my San Diego K-9 Unit series. Our editors and readers are always asking that we increase the conflict. In the previous books my heroes had to deal with the aftermath of a deadly earthquake, drug trafficking across the US/Mexico border and possible terrorism at an airport. When I was offered a contract to do a fourth book in the series, I considered what could be the most heinous and emotional thing that could happen to my hero and the notion of his young son disappearing came to mind.

What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?
In Chapter Seventeen, Sawyer is trying to cope with a shocking discovery about his ex-wife. It’s a tense, emotional scene and I had to make his reaction credible but still suitable for Heartwarming.

Will there be another book in the San Diego K-9 Unit series in the future? And if so, where will this story take us?
There just might be! Near the conclusion of Home to Stay, I introduced a new K-9 Unit officer, Quinn Langdon. Quinn isn’t a rookie cop, the way Shannon in Home to Stay was. He has considerable experience, having worked with the San Diego Harbor Patrol for ten years. After an incident that could have cost both Quinn and his canine partner, Cyrus, their lives, they are reassigned to the San Diego Police Department. Cyrus’s specialization is cadaver detection, so that opens up some interesting story ideas. I also introduced Alex Boyden, a young, hot-shot lawyer with the District Attorney’s office. Although Quinn and Alex didn’t meet in Home to Stay, there’s no question that they are both strong-willed and reasonably set in their ways. When they do meet, there is bound to be sparks!

What can we look forward to with your next writing project?
After Home to Stay releases in July, I have one more book releasing in 2017. A Priceless Find is a sequel to the award-winning A Child’s Christmas and releases in October. Here is the back-cover copy for A Priceless Find:
Can opposites really attract? A robbery followed by the discovery of a forgery at a respected art gallery thrusts Chelsea Owens into the center of an investigation headed by Detective Sam Eldridge. The instant chemistry between the high-spirited aspiring curator and the tall, dark, brooding cop is a classic case of opposites attract.
Complications arise when Chelsea uncovers a connection to an unsolved art heist. Teaming up with Sam to find the stolen paintings ignites feelings that could lead to lasting love. But Sam isn't ready to move beyond the tragedy in his past, no matter how promising his future with Chelsea could be.
