Open Book - Home to Stay

Today we are opening the book pages of Home to Stay by author, Kate James. Kate is sharing the inside scoop on her contemporary romance where between the pages you’ll find suspense and a K9 unit. Home to Stay was published on July 1, 2017 by Harlequin Heartwarming.

Kate said the title was derived from the plot of the book and the little boy who features prominently in it. “Home to Stay is the fourth book in my San Diego K-9 Unit series,” Kate said. “Our editors and readers are always asking that we increase the conflict. In the previous books my heroes had to deal with the aftermath of a deadly earthquake, drug trafficking across the US/Mexico border and possible terrorism at an airport. When I was offered a contract to do a fourth book in the series, I considered what could be the most heinous and emotional thing that could happen to my hero and the notion of his young son disappearing came to mind.”

Kate explained a little boy goes missing from his family’s campground. “Rookie K-9 unit cop Shannon Clemens is called in but finds herself facing both professional and personal demons, as she fights to safely reunite the little boy with his single father, and not let emotions get in the way.”

Home to Stay takes place in San Diego, California. “The story opens in Cuyumaca Rancho State Park and most of it is set in San Diego,” Kate explained. “San Diego is on the ocean, it’s not too big, has culture, lots of entertainment and friendly people!”

One appealing aspect in Home to Stay is how generous of spirit both Sawyer and Shannon are, to be able to support and help each other, despite struggling with their own debilitating grief and despair. “Another appealing element is how the rescue dog that Shannon encourages Sawyer to adopt becomes a de facto therapy dog for Dylan to help him deal with his ordeal and resultant Stockholm Syndrome,” Kate said. “The book underscores a single father’s love and dedication to his young son, and that it’s possible for romantic love to flourish even under the most unlikely circumstances.”

Home to Stay is the fourth book in the San Diego K-9 Unite Series. The first book is When the Right One Comes Along, released on October 1, 2015. The second book is When Love Matters Most, released on January 1, 2016. The third book is When I Found You, released July 1, 2016. “The series involves San Diego Police Department K-9 Unit officers, their police dogs and respective love interests,” Kate added. “As noted previously, this book ramps up the conflict even more.”
