We asked Zara where her favorite three places to visit are, and why.
1. Greece - My husband is a cultural anthropologist, and we were lucky to be able to carry out ethnographic research among the shepherds of Greece for many years. We lived in several small villages in the Peloponnesus and in Crete. The women we lived with taught me how to spin and weave the local wool and goat hair.
This was the beginning of my lifelong love of weaving and the inspiration for my first writings. When I returned, I lectured widely and was asked to write articles about the weaving there. This led to my first publications on handloom design and weaving techniques. When, in later years, I turned to writing fiction, I incorporated my love of Greece into my Skin Quartet series. 2. Newfoundland - Many years ago, my husband and I spent our honeymoon camping and traveling to the Viking archaeological site in Newfoundland. At the time, the over two-hundred-mile trek to the northernmost tip was a dirt road, but the scenery was worth every pothole and bump. Giant icebergs floated down the Strait of Labrador, the beaches were covered in amazing driftwood, and the sunsets were the most brilliant I’ve ever seen. We were the only tourists at L'Anse aux Meadows and were fortunate to have a guided tour of the then-unreconstructed site by the son of the man who owned the land.
It was June, and one downside was camping amid a myriad of blackflies and mosquitoes. At one point, my husband whacked a mosquito against the car windshield, shattering it. That led to a trip across Newfoundland to St. John for a repair. While there, I was interviewed by the local radio station about our trip, and we also got to see the Portuguese “White Fleet” with its square riggers and its dories stacked up on deck.
The finale of the trip was two weeks camping in the wilderness on Beothuk Lake. We chose an island (the one I was abandoned on for too long) and enjoyed the stillness and beauty around us. I have traveled widely, but our stay in Newfoundland will always be the most perfect trip I have ever taken.
3. Nova Scotia - My husband’s family has deep ties to Nova Scotia, so it was natural for us to settle into a cottage on the sea after I retired from teaching. This is where I do my writing, surrounded by the sea, the pines, the cry of the seagulls, and the resident deer herd. My writing studio looks directly out at the sea. Instead of cars zooming past, I watch the fishermen heading out to sea.
