Teaser: “Once again, they’d been dealt the painful reminder that safety was a well-crafted illusion. Safety didn’t exist on the trail.”
A perilous journey – An untamed spirit.
In 1847, Winnie and her family are traveling west to start a new life in the Oregon territory. While many in their wagon train fret over river crossings, disease, and encounters with Native tribes, she relishes the unexpected freedom of life on the trail.
Threatened by storms, wild animals, and outlaws, Winnie must rely on the bonds she’s made and all she’s learned in order for them to make it to Oregon alive. She also must decide if she is ready to risk forming an attachment to Hal, the cowhand who has a knack for showing up just when help is needed, or whether she will emulate Mae, the free-spirited daughter of their trail guide.

Author Bio: Kaci Curtis is a military spouse, and mom of two. She was raised in Kansas City, MO, only minutes away from the town of Independence, where the Westward Trails began. She loves hiking, camping, reading while sipping coffee, all things National Parks, thunderstorms, gardening, and book club.
Before Kaci leaves, we asked her where her favorite three places to visit were and why?
Kaci:
1) My parents’ house in Kansas City - the house that I grew up in. I’ve been a military spouse for over a decade, and moved five times since then. My parents’ house is the only home that I’ve been able to keep, and the one that I haven’t (yet) been forced to leave behind to follow my husband’s career around the world.
2) Glacier National Park – few places I’ve ever been have filled me such wonder and so much gratitude. There is so much wildlife, and so many fantastic hikes – Glacier is a true hiker’s paradise.
3) Sequoia National Park – I cried the first time I saw a grove of sequoia trees. They gloriously defy description. When we lived in San Diego, I used to take my son there to camp and hike when my husband was away on deployments.
