The Author's Den - Kara O'Neal

We are happy to welcome to The Author's Den, Kara O’Neal, who is sharing with us a bit about herself and giving us a peek at her book, The Sheriff’s Gift.

Kara, please tell us a little about yourself.
I am Texan (yeehaw!), over forty (yikes!), a wife (love!), a mother (double love!) and a book hoarder (so dangerous…). Books are friends, in my opinion. Writing books has become as much an obsession as reading. Happy endings are a MUST, as is humor. I’m not very funny, but I try to insert wit into my stories where I can. I can’t get through life without my family, my sisties (combination of “bestie” and “sister”), tacos and the Ten Commandments.

What’s your guilty writing procrastination secret?
Hmm…I think I have a few, but Pinterest is probably the biggest culprit!

What does your writing space look like?
I sit on my couch and usually have a TV show or movie playing while I write. I know, it’s weird that I can write like that. I think it’s because I grew up with six people in the house and need noise. The TV shows that I play on repeat are: The Closer, The Office, Murder She Wrote, Monk, the Golden Girls, Psych, and Once Upon A Time.

How do you come up with the titles of your books?
Sometimes this is soooo hard! Usually there is a theme to the book that helps me craft a title. Often, I use the hero or heroine’s profession. For example, The Editor’s Kisses came from the profession of the hero, and a scene in the book when one kiss changed everything for the couple.

Do you work with an outline or just write?
I just write, but not before I see the scene in my head. It’s like a moving picture. But before I can make the picture move, I must know the characters. So, I talk to them in my head for a little while. (Is that scary weird?)

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not writing?
When I’m not writing, I am spending time with my family. They are everything to me!

Where did the inspiration for your current story come from?
I see scenes in my head. I often ask myself, “What would happen if…” or “Wouldn’t it be neat if…” So, usually, my books develop because of one pivotal scene. For The Sheriff’s Gift it was the moment when Alice, the heroine, rolls out of her rented buggy with her rifle in hand, kneels on the ground and takes on the Hunt gang.

Tell us more about your current release.
My publisher went out of business in March, so I’m re-publishing my titles myself. The Sheriff’s Gift is my most recent release. Alice is based off of my sister. My sister is a hero to me in real life. She is a lifeline and has saved me multiple times over. So, in The Sheriff’s Gift, Alice saves several people, including the man she loves. She can wield a rifle as well as a slide rule or piece of chalk.

What are two things people might be surprised to know about you?
I’m not really a mysterious person. People know me pretty well. I don’t change. However, I can’t whistle. I don’t know why. I don’t understand how to do it. My husband has tried to teach me, but I can’t figure it out! I think people would also be surprised that I would LOVE to go skydiving. I think people would be shocked because I don’t seem adventurous and don’t usually take risks.

What books might we find on your bedside table?
Oooo!!! Yay! I love answering this kind of question. Right now, I am reading The Invention of Murder and The Devil in Pew Number Seven. I am also reading Targeted by Marissa Garner, and just finished reading Cold Turkey by Janice Bennett.

Describe yourself in three words.
Loving, Calm, Patient

What can we look forward to with your upcoming or next writing project?
As soon as my husband finishes my cover, I will re-release The Cowboy’s Charms. I haven’t mentioned that yet, have I? My husband, God bless him, is a former graphic designer turned Art teacher. He’s designing all my covers! I also just finished writing book 13, The Inventor’s Heart and book 14, The Deputy’s Damsel. I can’t wait for those stories to hit the shelves!

The Sheriff’s Gift: Historical Romance, Western, Steamy.

The Sheriff’s Gift
By Kara O’Neal
Forbidden kisses with the sheriff were not a part of the schoolteacher’s plan…
Strong-willed and independent, Alice Parker is certain she’s meant to be a school teacher. She accepts her first position in Pikes Run, ready to mold the minds of young children, but unprepared to deal with her attraction to Sheriff Conner Lonnigan. If the board finds out she’s tumbled into his embrace more than once, she would be fired.

Sheriff Conner Lonnigan is awed by Alice Parker. He falls for her almost immediately, but the demands at home forbid him from marrying. Conner’s duties as sheriff control his days, and his mother’s panic attacks control his nights. He doesn’t have the freedom to devote himself to Alice, but that can’t stop him from pursuing her anyway.

Alice and Conner fight their love for each other, but the wants of the heart become too much to ignore. As they battle the demands of their jobs, the couple finds that ultimate fulfillment can only be found in each other's arms.

Sounds like a perfect partnership, a graphic designer hubby. I love that you mention you write with noise in the background. I can actually write and hold a conversation. This is an art you acquire when you're on a tight deadline.

I loved getting to know you better, Kara. Always happy to find another Texas gal. Wishing you continued success!

It's a treat to learn more about Kara. Love her stories! And Kara - I can't whistle either. My mother told me women who whistle are like roosters who lay eggs. I never figured out what that meant, but I wonder if it impaired my ability to learn to whistle.

Great interview! I can't whistle either, LOL. What's up with that? Your book sounds wonderful...congrats and best wishes!

You’re so lucky to be able to write with noise going on. I grew up with five in the house, but I’ve always needed complete silence in order to “see” my story unfold. Congratulations on the release, and thanks for sharing!

Thank you for visiting! And I have to admit that I'm glad I'm not the only person who can't whistle!

Sadly, I need silence when I write! I'd be a lot more productive if I could work with the TV going. It's wonderful to get to know you better, Kara!

I can't whistle either, Kara and I talk to my characters all the time and love it when they talk back. Not scary weird LOL... typical of most writers I bet.

Great post
Good luck and God's blessings with your new books and re-releasing your backlist!
