Between The Pages - Redeemed By Fire

Redeemed By Fire
C J Bahr
September 2021

Cassanne Thomas returns to New Orleans to start her life over and becomes the target of a supernatural serial killer. Escaping her close call with death, Casi is the only witness to the crime and finds herself placed in protective custody by a handsome Cajun detective. But with her dark, troubled past, trusting the police is the last thing she wants to do.

Detective Lucas Avery, the top homicide detective in NOLA, is unaware of the supernatural world surrounding him. With the killer stalking the streets, he vows to shield the beautiful, enigmatic Casi with his life while fighting his growing attraction to her. He's been burned before.

Danger chases Lucas and Casi from the streets of the French Quarter to the wilds of the bayou. Will they be able to stop a monster, straight out of a nightmare or become victims themselves?

Between The Pages
Grab a blanket and a cup of your favourite drink then clear your afternoon because once you start reading this book, you won’t want to put it down. First, the cover is creepy but in a really good way. The cover grabs the visual attention, and the story hooks you with the opening chapter. This paranormal romance has a slice of everything – romance, angels, a serial killer villain, action, and drama. The characters are well-developed from Casi’s emotional backstory to Luc being just an amazing guy. There were even several secondary characters that stood out. One of my favourites was Vincent, who I hope gets a story of his own. This is the third book in The Fire Chronicles, and while I didn’t read the first two books, Redeemed By Fire reads well on its own and I didn’t feel as though I was missing anything from the story. I want to brag more about this story, but I don’t want to reveal any secrets, so I will end by highly recommending this book.

Between The Pages - Blood On The Chesapeake

Blood On The Chesapeake
Randy Overbeck
April 2019

Wilshire, Maryland, a quaint shore town on the Chesapeake, promises Darrell Henshaw a new start in life and a second chance at love. That is, until he learns the town hides an ugly secret. A thirty-year-old murder in the high school. And a frightening ghost stalking his new office. Burned by an earlier encounter with the spirit world, Darrell doesn’t want to get involved, but when the desperate ghost hounds him, he concedes.

Assisted by his new love, he follows a trail that leads to the civil rights movement, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and even the Klu Klux Klan. Then, when two locals who try to help are murdered, Darrell is forced to decide if he’s willing to risk his life—and the life of the woman he loves—to expose the killers of a young man he never knew.

Between The Pages
A great mystery, ghostly haunting story. The plot is well-developed with a visual setting and interesting characters. As the storyline moves along, you become part of the story, wanting to help Darrell find evidence to help Hank find justice. Darrell is a likable lead, and Erin is a solid match for him. The romance element is low, but present enough to see these two characters grow closer. The cast of secondary characters each have their own unique part in the story that continues the development of plot. Readings from the diary hold a significant piece of the puzzle, and the hauntings are the spotlight. The historical aspects of discrimination were done well and created an emotional pull. While the story is long (not a one sitting read), you’ll keep turning the pages to discover who the villains are before they strike again.

Between The Pages - Rorik

Rorik
Mary Morgan
June 2021

The Dark Seducer is known throughout Scotland as a man who charms many women into his bed. Pleasure is his motto as he obtains information for his king. Yet Rorik MacNeil harbors one secret buried beneath his heart of steel. An unfulfilled conquest plagues both man and his inner wolf, and Rorik would rather suffer death's sharp blade than confront his greatest fear.

As the Seer for the Orkneyjar Isles, Ragna Maddadsson confronts an unknown destiny when she travels across the North Sea to Scotland. In her quest to deliver a message from a powerful vision, she fears the warrior will not listen. If Rorik ignores her warning, Ragna must find a way to forestall his impending death. If unsuccessful, she risks having her heart cleaved in two.

To unravel their true fates, Rorik and Ragna must trust in the power of the wolf.

Between The Pages
Loved this story! Rorik is my new favourite hero! This wolf/man is a heartbreaker. And Ragna holds her own with a strong stand. If two characters were more perfectly matched it would be Rorik and Ragna. Their chemistry steams off the pages. The plot was captivating and engaging. I didn’t want the story to end. With a great cast and a beautiful setting, this historical, paranormal book is a must read. I anxiously await the next book in The Wolves of Clan Sutherland.

July 2021

Gale's engagement is off because she refuses to leave her thriving business in Ireland to follow Dillon to Scotland. Her family and friends are on the emerald isle. Yet, when Dillon returns with the whole story and asks for her help, she must follow her heart.

Becoming a Solicitor, then partner in the family law firm was never Dillon's dream. Now it's his nightmare. Called to Scotland, his father demands he take his rightful place in the firm or be disowned and disinherited. Something is terribly amiss in the firm and family.

During Gale and Dillon's investigation, they discover the enforcer for the Demon Overlord is also delving into rumors the firm is acting illegally. Magic has been stolen, someone is being blackmailed, and a member of the Witch's council is corrupt. If Gale and Dillon want a life together in Ireland, they have to unearth secrets threatening to destroy the firm and family in Scotland.

Between The Pages
This story is a hit in so many ways! The cast is superb with each one well-developed from the main characters to the secondaries. The plot is fascinating with magic, romance, mystery, and action. The setting is captivating with Scotland and Ireland in the spotlight. Ms. Stetler pulls you into the story and holds your attention as the pages turn with ease from beginning to end. Gale and Dillon were perfect leads, but I enjoyed so many characters in this story, I can’t wait to see them in another book, especially Trouble! A magical, paranormal story you won’t want to put down.

Between The Pages - Hidden Gypsy Magic

Hidden Gypsy Magic
Tena Stetler
September 2020

The Salem Wildlife Sanctuary is Gwen Taylor's life work. Her Irish Gypsy heritage provides a hidden talent she uses to help the creatures under her care. But even her magical skills can't help new rescues in dire need of veterinary care.

The opportunity of signing on as the vet for Gwen's sanctuary dropped into Brock Scutter's lap after he expanded his practice to include wildlife. The personal attraction he and Gwen experience is undeniable the more their professional and personal lives collide.

Touring the only "non-haunted" house in Salem they both feel a spark of magic. A trip to his family's cabin uncovers a heritage he didn't know existed. If they want a future together, it means facing the consequences of awakening hidden Gypsy magic and a race against the clock to correct past wrongs.

Between The Pages
Romance, animals, magic, and friendship draw you into this story. The characters are well-developed, and I enjoyed the strong bond between the main characters and their family and friends. While the story and romance are a bit slow in the beginning with Gwen and Brock already having a connection from a previous book, the magic keeps the story moving. The mystery surrounding Brock’s house was interesting, and I really enjoyed every scene at the Wildlife Sanctuary…turtles, an owl, and an adorable pup!

Between The Pages - Root Brew Float

Root Brew Float
Sidney Winward
May 2020

Josephine Brevil has lived hundreds of years haunted by the horrors she experienced during the Salem Witch Trials. She takes great care to hide her powers, though serving a Root Brew Float laced with a magic potion now and again never hurt anybody. The Order sends her to Massachusetts to deal with a paranormal threat, and she meets the young and handsome widower, Clarence Watts. However, being with him comes with a choice. How can she choose between the man she loves and the magic she holds dear?

Between The Pages
This is a short novella, but so well written that the flow is smooth and doesn’t leave any holes in the story. The plot revolves around a witch who falls for a mortal, while spiking ice cream with a little magic. The main characters are perfectly matched. Clarence needs Josephine’s help to rid his house of haunting as well as himself. There’s an interesting twist, linking Clarence and Josephine. This story is a sweet and fun paranormal romance with lots of magic. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Between The Pages - Devil’s Food Ripple With A Cherry On Top

Devil’s Food Ripple With A Cherry On Top
Laura Strickland
April 2020

Fenady Clark's dream of owning an ice cream parlor has inspired her through some of life's hardest challenges. Just when the grand opening's within reach, that wicked rogue, Sebastian Bane, opens shop and starts serving Fenady's designer flavors, all renamed. She suspects he's using black magic to poach her recipes, and if she weren't a good witch instead of a bad witch, she'd whip up a spell and retaliate.

Sebastian's come all the way from England to establish his family's business near Salem. He can't explain how he and the lovely Fenady keep creating the same ice cream confections, unless it's enchantment, or fate. Is there room in town for both their dreams? And what will it take to convince an angry white witch she needs him in her life?

Between The Pages
With such a cute cover, this book is perfect for a lazy afternoon read. The setting is relaxing and the characters are magical. Sebastian is a wickedly good hero. The interaction and chemistry between him and Fenady is enjoyable to read. The storyline is fun with a twist on two witches destined to be together. There’s even a connection between their employees. Not sure if it was black magic or the recipe flavour titles being whipped up, but this story will definitely have you craving a big bowl of ice cream.

Between The Pages - Mystic Maples

Mystic Maples
Tena Stetler
May 2019

Earth/Fire witch Mercy Rose's insatiable curiosity always gets her in trouble. After a break-in at her Colorado flower shop, and a court battle that comes to a screeching halt in her favor, she arrives at Deerbourne Inn for a much-needed getaway. Looking for peace and quiet, she finds just the opposite in a startling handsome but mysterious man and his dog.

Silvanus Forrest's gypsy/fae heritage is a double-edged sword. The land he inherited from his parents is rumored to be enchanted. But when Mercy discovers the truth, his well-ordered life unravels, and they're catapulted into the past to right a wrong. Along the way their lives intertwine, and they discover the true meaning of family and love. Will they change the past in time to save their future?

Between The Page
This book was a perfect weekend read. The paranormal theme is filled with witches, gypsies, fae, and a ghost. It even has a quick time travel twist. The main characters were fun to get to know and the secondary cast was equally enjoyable from Rag-a-Muffin the dog, to both Sil’s and Mercy’s family, and the ghost at the Inn. The author’s descriptive voice places you in each and every scene. It was refreshing to read a story where the characters don’t go through a major upset in their relationship before getting back together. Sil and Mercy bonded instantly and stayed devoted to each other as their connection grew stronger. Their steamy relationship sizzles with more than just magic. This story even has a bit of action when Sil’s brother makes a sudden appearance. This is my first read by this author and the Deerbourne Inn Series, which won’t be my last from both. If you are looking for short story with magical elements and a holiday setting, I recommend this one.

Between The Pages - Sinners' Opera

Sinners’ Opera
Linda Nightingale
October 2019

Morgan D'Arcy is an English lord, a classical pianist, and a vampire. He has everything except what he desires most—Isabeau. As the Angel Gabriel he's steered her life and career choice, preparing her to become Lady D'Arcy.

Many forces oppose Morgan's daring plan—not the least of which is Vampyre law.

Isabeau Gervase is a brilliant geneticist. Though she no longer believes in angels, she sees a ticket to a Nobel Prize in Gabriel's secrets—secrets that have led her to a startling conclusion. Gabriel isn't human, and she fully intends to identify the species she named the Angel Genome. Morgan is ready to come back into Isabeau's life, but this time as a man not an angel. Will he outsmart his enemies, protect his beloved and escape death himself? For the first time in eternity, the clock is ticking.

Between The Pages
This paranormal romance is filled with drama, action, and plenty of blood. I haven’t read a vampire book in a while, but the main character, Morgan, with his charm and elegance, made the transition an enjoyable one. This book is long, so don’t expect to read it in one sitting. However, there is something always going on as you turn to the next page. The author places you in the dark scenes filled with intensity. Added twists will have you anticipating what will happen next. The cast of characters are interesting and one of my favourite characters was Isabeau’s friend, Kirsty. When she barrelled into a room with a gun in hand, I was smiling. I hope she gets a story of her own because she would make a good lead heroine. The plot was well done and the dialogue was a good mixture of emotion and wit. The ending was surprising. Not the happy-ever-after I expected. Not even a happy-for-now. The ending leaves you asking questions like...What will happen to Isabeau? What will happen to the baby? What is Morgan’s next step? The epilogue, told in Morgan’s voice, was fun and hinted to a sequel, which I would look forward to reading.

Between The Pages - His Magic Touch

His Magic Touch
Debby Grahl
December 2018

The night before Jared Dupre's wedding, a specter warns him the demonic witch, Adam Montief, has kidnapped his brother in a centuries-old vendetta unknown to Jared. A powerful witch himself, Jared tracks Adam from New Orleans to a remote island off the coast of Connecticut, where he's given no choice. He must rescue his brother and break his engagement to Kendra O'Connell, or they both die. After complying, Jared engages in a sword fight and believes he has vanquished his foe, but when he returns to New Orleans, he finds evil still threatens all he loves. Kendra, not knowing why Jared broke their engagement, devastated, finds solace in another's arms. With help from an ancestor's spirit, can Jared defeat the dark magic descending over the Big Easy while winning back the woman he loves?

Between The Pages
I was looking for something different to read and His Magic Touch was just the right book to choose. A fun paranormal romance with lots of magic. The author weaves a compelling story line with revenge as its focus. A great cast of characters, alive and dead. Angelique was a spotlight in every scene she appeared in. The author scripted the perfect villain. I disliked him immediately and waited for his demise. While I enjoyed the main two characters, there were a few times I felt Jared was a bit smug with his comments to Kendra. After dumping her and being away so long, he should have been more sympathetic to her feelings. And Kendra trying to start a new relationship too soon after the breakup, but she was under the influence of a ‘scent’ so I guess she gets a pass. Filled with ghosts, witches, magic, mystery, and action this story kept me spellbound to the end.

Between The Pages - Zoraida Grey and the Voodoo Queen

Zoraida Grey and the Voodoo Queen
Sorchia DuBois
August 2018

Zoraida Grey needs help. With the witchy Logan clan holding her best friend hostage in a haunted Scottish castle, she can’t trust anyone—certainly not beguiling but dangerous Shea Logan. And Al, her overprotective boyfriend, doesn’t believe in magic.

Only one creature strikes fear in the blackened hearts of the Logan witches. Trouble is Jock disappeared five centuries ago leaving a trail of destruction across the Gulf of Mexico. Now he’s stepped into a steaming pile of Voodoo.

Can Zoraida drag wayward Jock back to Scotland? And what’s she supposed to do with two men who promise completely different futures? A Scottish wizard, stripped naked and painted blue—a Voodoo priestess bent on immortality—a yacht-load of Caribbean pirates. What can possibly go wrong?

Between The Pages
This story starts where book one left us hanging. Granny, who was a favourite of mine in the first book, with the help of her sister (also Shea’s mother) Skulja (who was disguised as Grimalkin the cat) gives Zoraida a new task. The author does a superb job creating interesting characters. A few to watch for are Azili, who is an enjoyable, mysterious character, and Jock, who jumps from the pages running around naked and painted blue. The cast of characters are the driving point in this book, which also has plenty of action and adventure. This paranormal story has fun twists and turns. With a touch of romance, Zoraida finally chooses her mate. This story (like the first one) ends on an edge with a return to Scotland and Castle Logan, leaving the reader wanting to find out what happens next.

Between The Pages - Dragon Knight's Shield

Dragon Knight's Shield
Mary Morgan
January 8, 2016

Angus MacKay, leader of the Dragon Knights, failed his brothers and his clan upon the death of his sister. Now he must fight the darkness of despair tempting his soul. Back on Scottish soil, he comes face to face with Deirdre who can wield a sword as mightily as his warriors, and he takes her captive. Yet, with each passing day, the fire dragon inside him roars to claim the one woman fate has destined for him.

Famed mystery writer, Deirdre Flanagan, is unprepared for the next chapter in her life. On a vacation to Scotland, she steps through the mists and enters into a skirmish alongside a Highlander. However, the fight has only begun, and now she must battle Angus as well as evil in order to claim the love of this Dragon Knight.

Will their love be powerful enough to shield them from danger, or burn them to ashes?

Between The Pages
This is the fourth book in the Order of the Dragon Knights Series. The author continues to capture my interest with each time travel adventure. With a strong heroine and a stronger hero, the plot has edge-of-your-seat action. Angus and Deirdre take you on their journey through a picturesque setting, leading to a reunion that is long overdue. The brothers’ reconnection is engaging, as is their battle with the evil druid. The author then ups the excitement with a surprising twist near the end, giving you yet another reason to grab the next book!

Portence

Portence
Gini Rifkin
September 2017

In the final battle to save the Earth, Fae Warrior, Portence Goodeve stands ready to serve Mother Nature. But as she fights for the future of the planet, she’s haunted by her past. One near-death experience and a betrayal that goes deep become weapons that could get her killed.

Malachi, a cross/breed, half-sorcerer and half-Fae, is back to help fight the Reptile invaders. Once upon a time, his sexy Fae-half stole Portence's heart, breath, and good sense. Then he abandoned her—what if it happens again? Should she surrender to desire, giving both Malachi and love another chance? Or seek retribution and be done with him forever?

Portence and her sisters, as well as their Earth partners, are in a fight for their lives. When Malachi's magic is stolen and his life is in danger, will she discover the path to her future is bound by both love and duty?

Between The Pages
This fantasy romance is filled with plenty of action and drama. The third book in the Fae Warriors trilogy has the sisters battling the evil Reps and many more villains. Portence’s adventure holds a good pace and holds your attention with mystifying creatures. The opening chapter starts the action and even when the drama settles there’s more just around the corner. Portence and Malachi have an undeniable chemistry. One of my favourite scenes in the story is when the sisters are together near the end. You can feel their strength and sisterly bond. It’s been enjoyable reading the sisters’ adventure and sad to see it end. Maybe the author will treat us in the future with a look into the mysterious Mother Nature.

Zoraida Grey and the Family Stones

Zoraida Grey and the Family Stones
Sorchia DuBois
October 28, 2016

Granny’s dying, but Zoraida can save her with a magic crystal of smoky quartz. Too bad the crystal is in Scotland—in a haunted castle—guarded by mind-reading, psychopathic sorcerers.

Getting inside Castle Logan is easy. Getting out––not so much. Before she can snatch the stone, Zoraida stumbles into a family feud, uncovers a wicked ancient curse, and finds herself ensorcelled by not one but two handsome Scottish witches.

Up to their necks in family intrigue and smack-dab in the middle of a simmering clan war, Zoraida and her best friend Zhu discover Granny hasn’t told them everything. Not by a long shot.

Between The Pages
This book is packed with action and adventure, capturing your attention with mystery and suspense. The romance level is low, and the reader is left guessing for quite some time as to the story’s real hero. Zoraida has a love interest at home and there are two brothers she meets during her adventure. She has an attraction to all three men until later in the story when she develops a stronger connection with one. The cast of characters are well-developed and interesting, especially the feisty Granny. The author’s descriptive voice places you into a story of intrigue and a setting of magic and castles. The ending is surprising where the story doesn’t quite have a happy-ever-after, but more of a happy-for-now, and leaves you in suspense for book two.

Good Bones

Good Bones
L. A. Kelley
May 2017

No matter how challenging the case, psychologist Katherine Fleming never shirks from helping a patient confront a painful issue. Her keen powers of observation and compassionate nature have eased many troubled souls, but a homicide detective with a buried secret of his own stirs more than just clinical interest.

The first time Detective Jake Sumner spied the old house, he sensed the good bones. Little did he know the purchase of the property included an unusual tenant far from resting in peace. Can the new psychologist in town help him treat a ghostly trauma case or is his growing attraction to Katherine Fleming best left buried?

With the help of a mysterious white cat and a mystic mirror, Katherine and Jake join forces to solve a murder. Can they stop a killer from claiming the next victim or will their investigation only lead them six feet under?

Between The Pages
This story has a little bit of everything: action, mystery, suspense, romance, and paranormal activity. The author grabs your attention in the first chapter and keeps you gripped to the pages. Jake and Katherine have a sweet chemistry from the moment they meet at the coffee shop. There are multi characters in this story, which could create some confusion, but the author does a great job of giving each character their own unique individuality; from the missing women, to the secondary cast of friends and co-workers, to the suspected killer, to Katherine’s Grampa’s voice, and to Whiskers – the cat you’ll want to cuddle. There are several scenes that make you laugh and many more that have you sitting on the edge of your seat. As the tension rises, you won’t to put this book down. The chase is riveting even after the killer is revealed. I highly recommend putting Good Bones at the top of your reading list. This book is a must read!

Dragon Knight's Sword

Dragon Knight's Sword
By Mary Morgan
May 2014

Duncan Mackay will do anything to lift the curse from his family — even forfeit his own life. But his plans change when he encounters the woman from his dreams, literally. She is from the future, somehow has his lost sword, and can talk to the Dragon that is able to lift his family’s curse. Brigid O'Neill has spent her life listening to the mythological legends from Ireland and Scotland. So, when an ancient sword lands at her doorstep and she starts dreaming of a rugged Highlander, she drops everything and takes on a quest that will alter everything she believes. Before their journey ends, not only will Duncan and Brigid battle an ancient curse, they must also find the courage to believe in the destiny that brought them together.

Between The Pages
Ms. Morgan does a seamless job of mixing historical, paranormal, fantasy, and time travel. The setting drops you into 1204 Scotland where knights, faes, druids, and a dragon rule the pages. The historical details are interesting. The main characters are engaging and a large cast of secondary characters keep the reader entertained. There are several points of view throughout the story, which were slightly distracting. Pacing is good in the beginning, but slows in the middle; making the reader anxious for the action they know is coming. When the action does arrive, the story moves along at a great pace, leaving the reader satisfied to the end. This is book one in the Order of the Dragon Knights Series. I look forward to reading more of this series.
