Between The Pages - Red In The Snow

Red in the Snow
J.S. Marlo
September 2025

Snowstorms blow threatening notes onto the doorstep of Raven Brook’s isolated log cabin, but the police give them no credibility. In their ears, Raven’s tarnished reputation resonated louder than her complaints.

While on a snowmobile ride in the forest, Raven discovers the body of the disgraced officer who investigated her foster grandfather’s murder and dismissed her witness statement. Suddenly, the past she tried to escape roars back to haunt her and her young son.

Corporal Landon Steele is posted to a remote understaffed RCMP detachment to fill the position left vacant by a dead officer. As he searches for missing evidence, he stumbles on a string of suspicious deaths linked to his predecessor. His troubling investigation throws him into Raven’s warpath.

Trust is in short supply. Can Raven and Landon lower their guards, share their discoveries, and solve the murders before their fate intertwine in death?

Between the Pages
Red in the Snow was a compelling and heartfelt mystery that blended suspense with emotional depth, centered around a resilient hearing-impaired woman and her son, who face mounting threats in a small town. When threats escalate, an RCMP corporal steps in, not only to protect, but to uncover the truth behind the intimidation. J.S. Marlo crafted a well-paced narrative with richly drawn characters, a sweet romance, and a mystery that keeps readers guessing. An absorbing read from start to finish.

The Red Quilt

November 2021

A last-minute Christmas trip goes horribly wrong for Eli and his five-year-old granddaughter, Ruby. On their way to a Bed and Breakfast on Prince Edward Island after a kitchen fire forced them out of their house, they get caught in a blizzard and end up in the ditch.

Retired Military Nurse, Lana, lives on a potato farm with the ghosts of her husband and son. She welcomes into her home the marooned Eli and the young child he raises alone. The storm outside rages on and problems arise as Eli faces the demons and mistakes of his past, Lana becomes entangled in her neighbors’ illegal activities, and Ruby wishes for something Santa cannot give her.

The resulting mix offers hope for a second chance even as it threatens their lives. Can Eli and Lana survive another storm to enjoy the love growing between them? And will Ruby’s wish be granted?

Between The Pages
Love the cover of this book! It draws you into the story immediately, which has a tender and interesting plot. I was also drawn to this book from its setting in Prince Edward Island and Halifax. The author did a fabulous job developing the cast. Lana and Eli are older leading characters, but their attraction is still real and emotional. Ruby is beyond sweet, as is Chewy. The visual is done well, placing you into the snowy winter setting. The plot is superb with several twists, adding a mystery spin with drug smuggling, Lana’s son’s demise, and Eli’s ex-wife. And just when you think all the presents are neatly wrapped up, the author throws in a surprise at the end. A great holiday read. This book is the first in Fifteen Shades, and I look forward to reading more.

November 2020

While Violette remodels an escape room, the lines between illusion and reality blur. The escape room is based on the legend of a dead inmate who haunts a condemned penitentiary, but the fake prison cell she recreates transports her into the past.

As she relives the tumultuous events surrounding her life and the inmate’s death, Violette glimpses clues regarding the disappearance of her son-in-law and loss of her precious heirloom.

The past and the present collide, threatening the lives of Violette’s loved ones and unleashing conflicting emotions toward the men haunting her heart. Can she unravel the truth and save her family without losing her future?

Between The Pages
A gripping and entertaining read. You will want to stay focused while reading this book because there is a lot going on, but the author does a wonderful job with the plot and its details as she weaves you through another twist and turn you won’t see coming. The main characters are interesting, and the secondary cast is equally enjoyable. It’s fun watching Violette fall into the past and then unravel her discoveries into the present mystery. I was hoping one of Violette’s encounters would have been an actual ghost, yet every question and mystery is neatly answered in this must read time travel, suspense story.

Fascinated by the Legend of the Cornwallis Ghost, Becca sneaks into a military base to see the ghost’s tombstone.

When she finds and follows a secret tunnel to the Officers’ Mess, Becca meets a living and breathing Eve, the betrayed young woman who hanged herself and haunts Cornwallis.

Trapped in the past with Eve in the days leading up to her tragic death, Becca becomes Rebecca, a woman devastated by a shattering loss and failing marriage.

Can Becca unravel the past to give Rebecca and Eve a second chance, and escape with her heart and future intact?

Between The Pages
With the setting taking place in my area, I was excited to read this book and I was not disappointed. This romantic, time travel story was so engaging. The author grabbed my attention immediately with a good plot of mystery and suspense. There are so many levels of this story that kept me turning the pages. The historical theme was interesting and the cast of characters were all enjoyable. A well developed plot and the author’s voice makes this story a hit. The time travel aspect was well done from the slip into the past and the return trip to the present. I really enjoyed the twist of how the two main characters were reunited and how the author gave the reader an inside look with a summary of events near the end…and Becca’s surprising family connection. I anxiously await the next book in Unraveling the Past.

Between The Pages - Unearthed

Unearthed
By J.S .Marlo
June 2012

Shaped by regrets. Bound by duty. Driven by secrets. Rowan's future is jeopardized by the regrets she harbors and the deadly secrets she unearths.
Obligated to give up the man she loves, Rowan O'Reilly takes over Buccaneer Bed & Breakfast. Though her heart is in shambles, she is drawn to Avery Stone, a mysterious guest who reminds her of Bjorn…and everything she lost.
Haunted by a fatal decision, Avery escapes his past in Buccaneer's attic, but he can't ignore the previous owner's peculiar death, the strange bones exhumed by the spirited Rowan…or the annoying doctor vying for her attention.
As visitors wreak havoc on Buccaneer, Rowan stumbles onto deadly family secrets and unknowingly unearths a murderer. Yet nothing, not even the threat of her predecessor's fate, can stop her from digging for the truth.

Between The Pages of this story are interesting  characters and edge of your seat suspense. Unearthed is the story of Rowan, Riley’s daughter (from Unscripted/Book 1). While this book also contains several points of view, I didn’t find them as intruding as the first book. This story has emotion and suspense twisted together as you turn the pages to reveal another clue to the mystery. The author does a great job with the plot line and of hiding the true identity of the killer. You’ll be suspecting every character’s motives. A really enjoyable read. I can’t wait to read the third story in the series, Untamed!

Between The Pages - Unscripted

Unscripted
By J.S. Marlo
April 2012

Shaped by fire. Bound by duty. Driven by love. Riley's tumultuous life rivals the television scripts she writes for Wild Rescue.
After a bullet shatters his world, actor Blythe Huxley befriends Riley Kendrick, a new writer on the television show Wild Rescue, never expecting to discover a kindred spirit.
No stranger to tragedy, Riley lends a compassionate ear to Blythe's difficulties and soon becomes entangled in a web of illicit affairs and deadly intrigue.
When an arsonist and a killer both strike, Riley's fate intertwines with Blythe's, and her life and her heart hang in the balance. Will they be able to protect their past? And save their future?

Between The Pages of this story is a good romance mystery. The story includes several points of view, which intruded on the flow of the read for me. I also wasn’t sure who the hero was until much later in the story. However, even with the different points of view, and my confusion over who the hero was, the story is captivating with twists and turns that keep you guessing who is after Riley. Just when you think you know who it is, there’s someone else to suspect. This well-written story of friendship, loss, and romance is a must read for anyone who likes a good suspense mixed in.
